Our history

Founded in 2005, Baobab now supports almost 457,000 active customers in eight markets across Africa and China. Our 4,000 employees work together to simplify banking and promote our entrepreneurs.

Our vision

Because we are firm believers that financial inclusion is a vector for economic growth, we are addressing the needs of entrepreneurs who are currently underserved by mainstream banking services. We strive to make financial services more accessible, inclusive and transparent, helping our clients tap into their full entrepreneurial potential, regardless of financial status.

Women in Africa

At Baobab, We believe that progress happens by ensuring gender equity. Since 2005, we work hard to make sure that financial inclusion and economic growth benefit women equally. In 2022, Baobab promoted gender equality through the Women in Africa Program, in which Baobab Senegal employees mentored nine Senegalese women as they prepared their pitches to compete for funding in this pan-African programme. We also partnered with Sew, a Meta initiative, hosting the hybrid-format training for women entrepreneurs both online and at our branches.
